So, on Andrew Marr’s TV programme last Sunday, Alastair Campbell had to be given time to compose himself after being questioned about the roles of himself and Tony Blair in the declaration of war on Iraq.
This latter day Mephistopheles, presently enjoying an increase in his pocket money from sales of his novel and advising Gordon Brown recently on things such as Prime Minister's questions, became emotional when the interviewer pressed him on the matter of Saddam Hussein having had weapons of mass destruction. He started to reply but became emotional, pleading that ‘... he had been through a lot lately...’ (all together , ‘aaaaah’) and went on to defend the ex-Prime Minister, going on to say ‘I'm sorry if I do get upset about this but I was there alongside Tony, I know how that decision weighed on him, I know the care that we took.’ And adding that he understood why people were “upset” about the decision to go to war and going on to say that ‘The reason people are going over it again and again and again is because those who do disagree with the judgment that Tony Blair made actually don't want to see the other side of the story.’
As with the Faustian Mephistopheles, it is Mr. Campbell who doesn’t want to see the other side of the story, that the conflict led to the deaths of over 100,000 people and caused - and still causes – British taxpayers to bear billions of Pounds of taxation.
And Alistair Campbell asks us to understand why he became emotional, because ‘... he had been through a lot lately...’. Here’s one who has no sympathy for him at all!!
This Sunday it was Gordon Brown’s turn to show the nation what a caring man he is, with our best interests at heart – and, by the way, please will you vote for me, when I’ve plucked up enough courage to call an election.
